Day 54 - Building the Building Fund
Some of these getting-ready-to-get-ready days feel good to me to complete, but might make for some slow reading. Many thanks for sticking through it.
Today, I’m actually splitting the giving to nearly half, so that I’m still socking away money for the Home! Now that I’ve got the architect covered and I’ve piled up the money for the land, there’s the actual Building Fund.
In the past I’ve spoken to a guy named Mark Bass at Tapie Construction who was in the process of breaking into a new field with his partner — something they call Design-build.
The idea is that by getting a competent advocate on your side, you can have a coach who communicates the necessities a building owner faces that might only come up after the fact if you’re not adequately prepared.
Most home-builders are first time. Many of them never repeat the process because it is so painful to learn the hard way on everything. And many contractors earn more in the short term by communicating in a traditional way.
So, I’m establishing a fund for my “Design-build” coach, Mark Bass of Tapie Construction totalling $29,000
I’m pretty sure it doesn’t cost this much for a complete job. And, I’m also sure that I could hire them with somewhere between a $1000 and $5000 deposit and a reasonable retainer during the months of planning and construction.
In the initial call I had with them in actual life, the questions posed helped frame my thinking in a way that would obviously save me thousand if not tens of thousands of dollars. Just knowing that I’ve got an experienced team member to coordinate and communicate with the architect, interior designer, landscape architect, engineers, vendors, painters, city hall, real estate agent and escrow is a huge relief.
I think its also a relief to each of those people who don’t have to take the time to educate me every time they need a decision made, they can speak to him and get an educated response that takes their expertise and my vision into account, in a way that cannot be misinterpreted.
Good stuff in my book.
The other $25,000 today goes to Americans for the Arts. I love this organization. Their approach is fantastic. Their impact is real. Every dime raised for them is well directed!
